Imagine a soulmate au in which you can’t smile at anyone who isn’t your soulmate, so on the day the party meet up so they can introduce El and Will together, Max obviously is also there, and at some point she’s like cracking jokes (”Just because you can’t smile that doesn’t mean you’re not cracking up internally”), just generally trying to make them lighten up a little, and at first there’s just radio silence, until someone begins to laugh, loudly. They all look to see El, doubled over from laughter, start to rise up and look at Max, a smile still present on her face. 

When no one says anything, just stares dumbly at her, El frowns, a question mark practically hung over her head. “What?” She asks, and no one reacts but Max, who offers her a small but soft smile in return. After the initial shock wears off, they explain to El what exactly happened, and how she and Max are soulmates. From then on, it’s a little hard for the both of them to stop smiling at each other.
