It had initially been Max’s idea to go swimming at the quarry, August making it’s way in Hawkins and the temperatures rising to the point that it was too hot to go do something outside, leaving everyone sweating through their clothes and dampening their moods.
At first, everyone else, sans Will, had been a little skeptical about going to that quarry, seeing as they had seen Will’s, albeit fake, body being taken out from the water and the memory still left them with a bad taste in their mouths. But it didn’t take long for Max to convince them and it was on.
Will had stayed quiet throughout the whole talk, not knowing how to bring out the fact that he did, in fact, not know how to swim, as he has never had the chance to practice and actually learn. By the time he had wanted to protest against the idea, everyone was on board with it, clearly looking forward to spending their day in the water and refreshing themselves. So Will didn’t say anything at all, let them make the plans and adjust the day and time, resolving to just coming up with a plan and not let them know about his problem. He didn’t want to ruin their fun.

It’s true that they are cute, but I can’t really say that I ship them. I like their friendship a lot, especially because he did accept El, after Mike obviously, pretty quickly and their scene this season was pretty cute but I can’t really say I see much between them beyond that 😅

Funnily enough, it had been Mike’s idea to go ice skating. Will was pretty skeptical at first since he hadn’t really ever done that before so he was pretty sure he was going to fail spectacularly at it. But Mike insisted, telling him it would be fun and that Mike would help him out if needed, and Will just couldn’t say no to Mike’s hopeful expression.
Right now, he’s so glad he’d taken the idea because he’s having the time of his life.
Mike is a complete klutz on the ring. He’s flailing about, his arms doing weird twitchy movements as to keep himself balanced. He’s trying very hard to move even an inch from the spot he’s been in for the past half an hour but even the smallest motion has his legs shaking and he’s probably about to fall any second now.
Will, to his immense surprise, is perfectly stable on his feet and has already done a few laps around the ring before he went back to look for his boyfriend who hadn’t made much progress from where he left him.
Mike does end up falling straight on his ass, Will not having had enough time to react and reach for him. He’s about to offer Mike a hand up before he hears him muttering curses and Will just about loses it.
“These are the work of the devil I tell you. Why else would anyone think that moving around with blades on your feet would be a good idea? Yeah, I DON’T THINK SO.” And to complete the scene, Mike is failing so hard at getting back up. He’s on his hands and knees, working very hard on staying steady so he can put his weight on his feet again but fails every time and he stumbles around on the ice, grumbling and cursing more and more as he keeps on trying.
And Will just can’t help it really, he starts to laugh harder than he’s ever done before. He’s clutching at his stomach, having doubled over when his laughter went up higher in volume. He tries to stop a few times, but it’s not working and the look of betrayal Mike keeps sending him isn’t helping at all. He can feel tears falling freely down his cheeks from how hard he’s laughing.
Mike, who very slowly had managed to get back up on his feet, tries and fails to stay mad at Will, because really, it’s been such a long time since Mike has seen Will so happy and carefree than no matter how much he tries to make his eyebrows furrow, it doesn’t work and he ends up with a silly smile on his face.
He’s happy Will is happy, even if it’s at his expanse.
And anyway, Will does make up for it later by holding his hand the entire time they’re skating and not letting go for even one moment.

bywheelers replied:Well we’re almost the same age, since I’m 22 and really, as long as you ship ONLY the fluff and don’t go into sexual territory then it’s completely alright. I mean, thing about it this way: most of the fandom ships mileven which is also a ship with minors, just like byeler, and everyone is pretty much on board with the idea. So there’s nothing wrong with thinking they’re cute together. Just don’t go to the dark side and there will be nothing to feel weird about.

bywheelers replied:Ha! You do not know how much I’ve thought about this anon and every time I arrive to the conclusion that Mike would become a blushing mess? Like obviously Will is very cute with his bowl cut and Mike is totally aware of this so when Will suddenly comes to his house with that new haircut his brain totally becomes mush. Will looks absolutely amazing and Mike really doesn’t understand what in the world is going on anymore. He stops functioning right there and there on his front porch and the only thing that passes by in his mind on repeat is that Will is completely and irreversibly handsome and he can’t unsee it now so he’s stuck becoming a blushing mess every single time he so much as glances at Will.

bywheelers replied:Oh man, that is actually a totally cool idea, it would probably open up a new window of angst but okay, hear me out.
Will Byers was born a female but he never really felt like one. From a young age, he realized that he was never like the other girls, he didn’t really like to talk about topics like dolls, romance or whatever. He liked to play video games, to draw cool adventures and he was quieter than anyone else. Of course he never really understood exactly why he never truly felt uncomfortable in his own skin, and his dad’s words never really helped much in making him feel better.
It’s not until years later that he realizes what exactly is going on with him. He’s very afraid of telling anyone, even his mom or Jonathan, but he braces himself, draws in courage and manages to explain to both of them what is going on with him. For their part, both Joyce and Jonathan had an inkling for they know Will really well so him telling them just confirmed it. Of course they’re hella supportive of Will and always make sure to make him feel a little better in whatever they can, like calling him with the pronouns he desires, letting him wear Jonathan’s old clothes instead of the more frilly ones his mother bought him or letting him cut his hair to the length he prefers.
Much like everything else in these days, not everyone is as supportive of him as his family so at school and in general, he gets ridiculed at pretty much every step he takes. From calling him names or telling him mean stuff, to the most horrible part which is that some people take it too far and harm him physically. They always do it while taunting him, things like “You want to be a man? Well be a man and fight us back.” thrown at him. Will doesn’t really know which hurts the most, their taunts or the bruises they leave when they’ve gotten tired of him for the day. In the end, it all piles up, and it really brings him down. He becomes quieter than usual, wonders if being himself, not what they expect of him but the true him, is such a bad thing. Starts wondering if he’s as weird as people make him out to be and whether there’s a point in him being there at all.
The party obviously see Will’s slowly self-destruction so they talk between themselves and make a plan to make Will see that he’s beautiful and amazing just the way he is, and that no matter what gender he was born, if he doesn’t feel comfortable with it and wants to change it, then that’s okay and he’s completely in his right to do so.
They make sure to compliment him every chance they get, about anything and everything. They bark at anyone that so much looks at Will funny and be it known in history that they went down fighting every time someone tried to harm Will. Mike and El are probably the two that Will talks to the most, since they’re always the ones that understand him the best. Dustin is the one that brings the most beautiful laughs out of Will when he’s in a special sad mood. Lucas is very supportive about any changes Will makes and makes sure to tell him that all the time. Max always tries to distract him by trying to show him to skate. Will is terrible at it but he has so much fun that he forgets about his worries.
Will still has terrible days where he feels like everyone is wasting their time on him but his friends and family is always there to let him know how untrue that is.

Ever since the gate closed Mike spends almost half his time with Will, either at the later’s house or at his own home. Most of the time he just grabs Will, lays him down on the sofa or the fort and Mike cuddles the heck out of him.
They can spend all their time just holding each other close, Mike with his arms around Will’s middle hugging him close to his chest. Depending on whether they’re face to face or not, Will either plays with Mike’s fingers o with his soft curls while Mike loves to pepper kisses all over Will’s face and make him giggle. Will’s laugh and smile make Mike’s heart do crazy things in his chest and he absolutely loves it.
They pass their time speaking softly to each other, about trivial things or sometimes about the upside down and all the terror that still lingers in their frames in some situations. It calms them down and they can reassure themselves they’re both still there, safe and sound in each others arms.
