Note that they’re older in this, around 17-18.
In retrospect Mike should have thought better than to work in a coffee shop. It’s not like he entirely disliked it but having to smell the aroma of coffee for long periods of time every day really put a damper on his mood. In his opinion, coffee was a beverage born from the pits of hell, most like, what with it being bitter than anything else he’d ever tasted and no matter how he tried to sweeten it, it just didn’t work.
The customers could also be a pain in his arse what with them complaining about anything and everything or ordering weird and with never ending names beverages that really tasted one’s patience when working on them.
The only good thing, and what he looked forward to every single day without fail, was Will coming to visit him. Unlike Mike, Will had taken with gusto to drinking coffee and Mike made sure that every time Will drank that he gave him very disgusted side glances. Will only chuckled at Mike’s behavior but never called him on it, so Mike was not about to stop doing it. And talking about not stopping, there was also a routine they had developed over the course of Mike working in the coffee shop that they had yet to interrupt.
Just like every other day, Will would enter the shop, he would look around until his gaze fell on Mike, he would give him one of his brightest smiles, the ones Mike knows that he’s not faking and are completely genuine, will approach Mike at the counter and order the very same thing that he asks for every day.
And today is no different.
Before he can ask for it, though, Mike beats him to the punch. “One caramel macchiato with extra whipped cream, right sir?” Will groans, and Mike can feel his lips lift up in a smirk. “Please, never ever call me that again. But yes, thanks.”
Mike chuckles, but goes on to enter Will’s order on the computer. He takes a cup from his right and scribbles Will’s name on it, gives it to his coworker to do the coffee and goes back to the counter so he can chat with Will a little bit, especially since he’s lucky enough to not have any more customers.
Right after his coworker finishes Will’s cup, Mike will go take it from him and will write something on the cup for Will.
It had first started as a joke, sort of, wherein Mike had noticed that Will hadn’t been feeling that great lately and he just wanted to see him smile. An idea formed inside his mind, and from then on he had started to write funny things on Will’s cups just so he could see Will’s lips twitch and the corners lift up in a small but gentle smile. Mike had never felt prouder than right there and then. So, it had become routine and Mike had no intention to stop whatsoever. Quite the contrary, since he was about to write something very different and special for Will.
Will, for his part, finds Mike’s small one liners very sweet and funny so he’s always excited to see what Mike has written for him. When he gets the cup, he moves it in his hands until he finds the writing.
This time, however, he pauses after reading the note. Will can feel his heart start to beat widely in his chest, his eyes widening comically and a blush creeping up from the collar of his t-shirt up to the tips of his ears. He can feel his face go up in flames and he looks up from his cup, his eyes locking with another pair. He can see Mike fidget on the spot, worrying his hands with some cups he found on the counter, bitting his bottom lip and looking at Will with a hopeful expression on his face.
Will is about to start crying right there in the middle of the coffee shop, his feelings overbearing, like a faucet that’s been on for too long and now water is dripping everywhere. He gives Mike a huge watery smile and answers his question.
(”Will you be my boyfriend?” with a weird looking heart drawn right next to Will’s name is written on the cup. Will only has one answer to give Mike and that is, “hell yes!”.)
